Emily Flowers' new "tiny home" is made from a shipping container. Her brother-in-law, Jon Meier, operates Backcountry Containers and his tiny-home business was featured on HGTV/DIY Network's "Tiny House, Big Living" show on Jan. 5, 2017.

Floating shelves help the kitchen feel more open.

Emily Flowers decorated her Backcountry Containers home in boho-chic style.

Flowers sacrificed living space for a bigger bathroom.

Emily Flowers needed plenty of room for her 200 pairs of shoes.

The kitchen counter also serves as a place to eat, unless Emily Flowers decides to take her meals outdoors.

Her closet is hidden behind a small wall that separates the main living area.

A barn-style door also serves as a cover for shelving built into the wall.

The home has a ground-floor deck with a staircase leading to a rooftop deck.

The kitchen is on-trend with a farmhouse sink and wall-mounted shelves.

Even in a small bathroom, style matters. Flowers picked a cute light fixture, on-trend mirror and a bowl-style sink.

Her kitchen has a full-size refrigerator and stove and a farmhouse sink.

A small rack contributes more storage space.

The long rectangular space in Emily Flowers' Backcountry Containers home blends the kitchen, living room and bedroom in one continuous space.

The kitchen is small because Flowers said she doesn't cook much, and she'd rather have the space for her closet and bathroom.

Emily Flowers closet also includes her washing machine.

The shipping container home has a rooftop deck the full size of the home.

Emily Flowers and her sister Kristin Meier helped on the tiny house project, tiling the bathroom themselves.

A wall-mounted TV allows viewing from the bedroom and living room.

Industrial-style light fixtures blend with the feel of the rectangular, steel home.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story misidentified the organization building the home for the Laredo veteran in need.

In a parking lot full of delivery trailers and merchandise, a weather damaged container was unveiled as a community project from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9194 for a local veteran in need.

VFW Commander Ricardo Quijano unveiled the container that will become a housing unit provided to a local veteran.

“This is veterans helping veterans,” Quijano said. “The container is going to be fixed up, and it was donated by Green Zone Housing.”

The container will be furnished with a living room, kitchen with all major appliances, a bathroom and a single bedroom. Each container is going to cost approximately $23,000, according to Quijano.

“Everything began with (TAMIU’s Associate Athletic Director) Dan Lathey through scholarships,” Quijano said. “After scholarships, they moved on to Homes for Heroes, and then Lathey brought up the idea of bringing that to Laredo.”

Quijano added that the VFW Post #9194 ran with the idea and it has exploded beyond their expectations.

“The support and sponsors that we are getting from the community is out of this world,” he said.

Lathey said this type of project is going to be ongoing where student athletes will continue to help the VFW to house at-risk veterans.

“We’ve done this several years, but now the goal was to focus it on Laredo,” Lathey said. “We get thousands of community service hours every year, but this is probably going to be one of the main causes. We are going to continue doing a lot of things, but this is going to be the main focus for our athletes.”

This current container is expected to be finished before VFW Post #9194’s Appreciation BBQ Party at TAMIU March 28. The party will be held in conjunction with home baseball and softball doubleheaders with activities scheduled for a full day of family fun.

The community is invited to become sponsors of the project or volunteer their time. If interested, the community can contact Quijano at 206-1622.
